Series 1: Production Manuscripts, 1963-2019

 Series
Identifier: 1

Scope & Contents

The backbone of the archives are the production files – paper records containing everything that can be obtained with respect to each production or exhibition, arranged in alphabetical order by production. These include preliminary sketches, notebooks, scripts (where applicable), scores, staging and lighting plots, running books, project files/project books, any and all correspondence and business/artistic records related to the mounting of said work, programs, handbills, and all press (clippings, complete periodicals and related texts).

Highlights of the production files – which are important for both scholarly researchers and internal needs – include Wilson’s early sketchbooks and planning notes for such works as KA MOUNTAIN and Einstein on the Beach; rehearsal attendance sheets; early Byrd programs and fliers; copious staging and lighting information for the 1984 revival of Einstein on the Beach; and simple gestational sketches for The Old Woman. Earlier records tend to service scholarship on Wilson’s work and that of the 1960s-70s performance art climate in New York, while more recent records tend to support (albeit not exclusively) the needs of Wilson and his collaborators.
